I’m Not Kicking Up My Heels For Women’s History Month

When I started to think about what I should write in celebration of women’s history month, my initial thoughts were to write something passionate and uplifting about how far we have come, a positive piece praising our accomplishments and the historic election of the first female Vice President of the United States.

I could highlight the record number of women running for office and regurgitate the happy-go-lucky mentality of, “Watch your step, there’s glass everywhere!” Besides, if it is one thing I have learned is nobody likes a negative nancy and a perky, optimistic attitude is the key to popularity and success.

And then two things happened.

The first thing that happened was I realized that’s exactly what the world wants me to do. The world wants me to pretend the women’s movement is over. Those who ooze toxic masculinity want me to stay silent and docile. They want me to cower in fear of public rebuke or retribution. Those who abuse women physically, sexually, emotionally, and verbally don’t want me to talk about their pervasive existence in 21st Century America.

They want me to stay quiet. And too many of them want me to know my place which in their eyes is domesticated, subservient, and accepting the status quo.
